I'm going to share one of my favorite math tech tools! We had to give up our iPads in our math block for most of the month of March for PARCC, and boy, are we feeling the absence of this app. First of all, the kids love it and want to practice on it whenever they can get the chance. Second, the app/website is FREE. Third, it provides individualized differentiation for your students. It's called... Front Row!

You can access Front Row through a website (on a chrome browser) or through the free app.

I feel that this app is more beneficial than a center most of the time.

Here's how it works:

Your students will take a diagnostic assessment. It took my students about 30 minutes. From there, it collects data for you about which standards each child needs to work on and which ones they have demonstrated mastery. It provides the students with problems related to the standards that they need. It provides word problems, graphing problems, equations, and more.

It gives the students several tools to use to help them solve the problem. If they are really stuck, there is a video for each problem. They can click the video button and it will teach them how to solve a similar problem. It will also read the problem out loud to your students. After a while, it starts to use your students' names in the word problems.

It collects all sorts of data for you! It will show you how each of your students are doing with each standard as well as how many problems they have attempted. It will show recommendations for student helpers on the student's screen. They student helpers are ones who have been successful with that standard and could offer coaching.

Students are encouraged as they earn coins they can use to go to the reward store and buy items.

You can also invite the parents (if you wish) so they can see how their student is doing. This app has enable me to have my second graders working on 4th grade standards (when appropriate) and first grade standards (when needed) and everything in between. They move at their own pace.

I recommend checking it out! Let me know if you have questions!

Thanks for coming to Tech Tuesday!

  1. My students really loved Front Row last year! I have many of the same kids this year, so I wasn't able to use it again (it lost its novelty over time), but I'll definitely use it again next year with my new group of kids.

  3. I love Front Row! I stumbled across it by accident and tried it with some of my higher level thinkers to differentiate, they love it! I also spread the word to the teachers in my building and they have had a lot of success with it! Great idea Marie.
